Amex to Delta Transfer Time:
✅ Most transfers are instant, but they can take up to 48 hours in some cases.
The first few times you transfer points to an Airline from a Bank it can seem intimidating; after doing it a few times it becomes second nature.

Should you ever cash out points?
Never cash out points, always transfer to an Airline or Hotel, as you can often get 2-6 cents per point.
Best Ways to Use Amex Points for Delta Flights
The best use of Amex Rewards points is almost always to travel in International Business or First Class. Here you can get 6-8 cents per point, or more. Delta SkyMiles are valued typically valued at 1.1-1.3 cents. Delta uses a dynamic pricing model so if cash tickets are on sale, and very inexpensive it could be worth it to use Delta points.
Transferring American Express Membership Rewards points to Delta SkyMiles can be a good value but usually isn’t. If you have found an acceptable Delta flight, transferring is simple and can be done in a few minutes.
Here’s a look at some recent Delta SkyMiles award tickets from DFW:

- DFW to Seattle (SEA) for 12,000 SkyMiles (Basic Economy)
- DFW to Seattle (SEA) for 21,500 SkyMiles (Delta Comfort+)
- DFW to Honolulu (HNL) for 36,500 SkyMiles (Main Cabin)
Both Basic and Comfort+ to SEA are decent points values.
The Flight to Honolulu is not as good, especially since you could book Alaska Airlines for 35,000 points in First Class.
This Alaska Airline sweet spot award this is my preferred way to get to Hawaii. Check out our One World post to see how to book this with Amex Points.

Delta card 15% Off
If you hold a Delta SkyMiles® American Express Card (Gold, Platinum, or Reserve), you get 15% off Delta award tickets when booking with SkyMiles. This discount is called TakeOff 15 and applies to flights booked directly through Delta.
For example, if a ticket costs 100,000 SkyMiles, with TakeOff 15, you’d only need 85,000 SkyMiles. This perk does not apply to partner airline redemptions. Sometimes this can tip the scale and make it a good value to book on Delta.
Note: Additionally, American Express charges a small excise tax fee (0.06 cents per point, up to a max of $99) when transferring points to domestic airlines like Delta. While this fee is minimal, it’s something to keep in mind when comparing redemption options.
