Hotel Bolivar – A Centrally Located Hidden Gem in Rome
During a recent visit to Rome, I stayed at Hotel Bolivar, a boutique property tucked away on a quiet cobblestone street near Piazza Venezia. The location is exceptional—just a short walk from iconic sites like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Roman Forum. It’s a great home base if you want to explore Rome on foot without spending half your day in transit.
The staff was incredibly welcoming, which set the tone for the entire stay. From check-in to check-out, they were friendly, helpful, and always ready to offer recommendations or help with directions. It felt more personal than staying at a big chain hotel, and that really added to the charm of the experience.

Our room was small, which is fairly standard in older European buildings, but it was clean and well-kept. The style leaned classic, with dark wood furniture and rich tones in the bedding and curtains. While I appreciated the nod to tradition, a few modern updates wouldn’t hurt. The bathroom was spotless, though I’ll admit I had no idea how to use the bidet—clearly not something I’m used to back home.

One of the highlights of this hotel is its breakfast, served in a glassed-in rooftop room overlooking the city. It was included in our stay and honestly, it was much better than I expected for a free breakfast. The spread included fresh pastries, fruit, cold cuts, yogurt, and strong Italian coffee. It was a relaxing way to start each day, and the view was a bonus.

Getting around was easy. Most major attractions are within a 10-15 minute walk, and for spots like the Vatican that are farther out, you’re close to both metro stops and bus routes. The hotel’s location puts you close enough to everything, but far enough from the crowds that you can actually sleep at night.
Now for the best part: I booked this stay using points. Specifically, I transferred Citi ThankYou points to Choice Privileges at the 2:1 ratio (available with the Citi Strata Premier card). That meant I only used 10,000 Citi points per night, instead of paying the cash rate, which was around €350 per night. That’s one of the best redemption values I’ve found in Europe—a true sweet spot if you’re into points travel.
If you’re planning to book, I recommend reaching out to the hotel ahead of time if you have preferences like a larger room or need specific amenities. They offer airport transfers and laundry service, but it’s worth confirming availability and pricing in advance.
Overall, I really enjoyed my stay. Hotel Bolivar isn’t flashy, but it’s got a great location, excellent service, and delivers solid value—especially if you’re using points. I’d absolutely consider staying here again the next time I’m in Rome. It strikes a nice balance between charm, comfort, and convenience, without feeling overly touristy or corporate.
